Started by the Singh Family

Theka was opened in 2019, but the history behind Theka began several years ago. The restaurant was started by Harinder and Kiran Singh, who opened Punjab Tandoori at Grønland in Oslo in 1990. 

The restaurant quickly became a success, and is now known for its surprisingly affordable and authentic Indian cuisine. Kiran and Harinders families in India also run their own restaurants, and our dishes have always been inspired by their old recipes.

What is Indian Street Food?

Theka is one of the best Indian restaurants in Oslo to visit if you want to try Indian street food. Street food consists of several smaller courses that are full of fresh and spicy flavors. 

These kinds of dishes were originally served in the streets of India for people who wanted a quick, affordable and tasty dish on the go. The last decade, different kinds of street food have become increasingly popular all over the world.

Our restaurant got its name from the Indian Thekas. Thekas are natural meeting places where you can celebrate, meet your friends or just have a couple of drinks after work. 

The atmosphere is informal and the mood is festive and fun – which is what we wanted to recreate here in our own restaurant at Grünerløkka.
